In July, the Guggenheim Bilbao discovered itself embroiled in an issue which reignited the continued debate on the boundary between appropriation and plagiarism in art. At its heart was Spanish artist Gala Knörr‘s paintings of a Black cowboy which eagle-eyed social media customers stated bore hanging similarities to a film by Dayday, a Black queer filmmaker from Brooklyn. The work had been included in an exhibition which followed a joint residency program for Knörr and nine different Basque artists at the Guggenheim in New York and Spain. Critics online mentioned that Knörr’s pictures were ripped straight from Dayday’s movie brief filmBlue, that includes a younger Black cowboy recounting his entry into bull-riding. During these decades, artists usually used archival supplies or the type of the archive of their works, making research-based art to recuperate overlooked histories and marginalized figures or groups.
